I did this ride on Sunday afternoon, September 8, 2924, in 102 degrees. No joke. Must explain why it wasn’t very busy. I started at Anderson Lake County Park in Morgan Hill and went to Tully Road, just past the golf course south of downtown San Jose, and then turned around and returned to the park—40 miles, 1,190 feet elevation gain. Well maintained, all paved, relatively flat, and interesting trail with SO many squirrels and chipmunks dashing across the trail. Probably just playing with the bikers. Saw a flock of young turkeys on the trail. A hawk zipped close by me and tried to grab a rodent (missed). Lots of waterfowl in the ponds along the way. Vegetation became greener the further north I went from Morgan Hill, and more water in Coyote Creek. Saw coyote scat on the trail but no animals (too hot for them). There are several homeless campsites near the golf course, and even a rooster and cats and dogs. Overall, a great trail to see the arid landscape of the Santa Clara Valley (I live in the Pacific Northwest). Will plan to do it again in the springtime when it’s greener and not so hot, when I visit relatives again.
This particular trail is very well kept up, has a wide path of roughly 10 feet wide, and the trail itself goes under Riverford Road so that you don’t have to cross into the traffic if you don’t want to. The groundskeepers are constantly working on the shrubbery on both sides and keeping the fences kept up, and there are almost always people on the trails whenever we go, merrily saying good morning to us! My husband and I ride the distance and then turn around and go back, which ends up being a little over 6 miles which is just perfect for us. And, it’s a little bit challenging because there are changes and it is not a paved path, but a hard sand one.
My wife and friends have enjoyed this path a couple of times. It offers a rear view of the city. Traffic is minimal- a great Beginner Trail. The very west part off the trail has a homeless camp but again, a different view or aspect of life. I personally did not feel threatened but a female friend felt intimidated. I would highly recommend for new bikers or walkers / runners.
Beautiful shady trail short and sweet
As many have already described this path, the west side is scenic and a great bike path. The east side.....well it's Chula Vista and what can you say. Lots of homeless camps and burned-out homeless camps along the way. Poorly marked in many places. I've traveled this path many times and I now always do the west side only. I always feel safe on the west side and the opposite on the east.
This is a great trail. We start in Ventura and head up. As long as you pay attention you are fine. The guy behind us took quite a spill on a section of pavement that lifted due to tree roots. We all stopped to check and minis quite a road rash, he was thankfully OK.
Started to get bored so I bought myself a bike, I came out here to these trails, first I started from fairmount park in riverside and made my way north on the trail from there made it to the 10 freeway and back with no problems other than the heat( carful out there guys take water), as for the other bikers, all out there you’ll see them remember to say hello ! There were homeless on the trail next to the river but I had no issues with them. Definitely five stars from me, mostly because there was a vast distance to cover and I got the workout I needed, coming back for sure!
Use trail at your own risk! I am 65 yrs old and have been running, skating or bicycling this trail at the southern end for over 40 years. In the last 5 years it has deteriorated into a free for all playground for any type of speeding motorized vehicle imaginable. Dirt bikes, ATV's, UTV's, Mini-bikes...and worst of all, E-bike riders that speed along at 30 to 50 mph and pass within inches of you. Now there are teenager E-bike "gangs" that take over both lanes of the path and flip you off when you tell them to move over. It's completely out of control now. I personally know of one man that was taken to the emergency room at Los Alamitos for broken ribs after being forced off the path and into the rocks by E-bikers. Motor driven vehicles of any kind should never be allowed into this HPV trail and I hope something is done about it soon before someone is killed, if that has not already happened. I feel my safety is threatened to bicycle in the SGRT any more. It's safer in marked bicycle lanes in traffic now IMO.
Road from the El Dorado Station of the El Dorado Western Railroad 4560 Oriental St, El Dorado, CA 95623 to the Camino end of the trail. This is a well paved trail that winds through the hills climbing most of the way to Camino but is a thrill on the return downhill to the trail head. A couple of places to be careful crossing streets and a short section through old town Placerville. There are only a few bathrooms so take advantage as needed. Bring water. Mostly foot traffic with only a few bikes. Watch for wildlife. We saw a doe with twin fawns.
Great location but an overwhelming amount of homeless along the route. Alot of places smell like piss or weed. Better to look for another trail
We rode our bikes on this trail from the far west end parking area for 1.5 miles, before giving up and turning around because of the falling hazard. The gravel is so thick in the center of the path, that it causes your tires to get hung up and you are unable to steer. There was a deep hole in the path, probably caused by an animal. You cant see it until you are on top of it. There are pine trees and bushes growing over the trail that scratch you and force you into the thick gravel. The trail needs major maintenance to make it safe for bike riding. almost fell a couple Itwas so slow going
We started at the beginning of the trail where parking is and walked all the way to Avila, had lunch and went back. So beautiful!!!
